Computer Rematch: Windows 8 Takes on Mac OS X Lion

Windows versus Mac? It's a question that's been asked since IBM clones and original Macintosh computers emerged in the early 1980s. Fast forward to 2011 and you'll see the obvious: computers are no longer tethered to desks. In fact, when Microsoft and Apple revealed their latest plans this spring, the emphasis on "mobile" couldn't be ignored. With tablets and smart phones becoming increasingly useful and popular, desktops and even laptops are beginning to integrate many of the same features such as touch screens and tiles.

In fact, in Apple's case, the new operating system, OS X Lion, borrows heavily from its mobile computing platform, iOS. Microsoft is taking the opposite approach. Instead of building on its Windows Phone platform, its redesigning its operating system to be friendly to tablets, mobile devices, and desktop computers.

Microsoft Windows 8 discards the familiar windows and folders architecture in favor of a more mobile-centric approach. For those who can't bear to give up their windows and folders, a "legacy" mode is available. For the rest of users, expect to see touch screen features such as tiles and simplified menus. Windows 8 is billed as being touch-friendly, yet it will continue to work with a keyboard and mouse if desired.

Meanwhile, Apple's OS X Lion operating system forgoes the touch screen in favor of the traditional keyboard and mouse input devices. Apple's computers and portable devices are clearly two different categories, serving different purposes. After all, computer users sitting at a desk have different needs than those on the go – and they have the luxury of space for a full sized keyboard.

Which operating system will beat the other? Microsoft and Apple have been jockeying for market share for decades and the battle continues. . . Either way, it's a matchup of champions and sure to be fun to watch and experience.
