Corporate Computer Training Trends
Corporate computer training takes many forms with some companies preferring live training and others choosing self-study training options. Some prefer to develop and conduct the training in-house while others outsource it. Below are a few of the more common corporate computer training trends.
In-House Training
In-house training programs typically use the expertise of the organization's own people. This can make a great deal of sense as the organization likely has a pool of talented individuals capable of sharing their knowledge. However, the downside to relying on in-house expertise is that the knowledge shared is too limited in its scope, often highly specialized. With outside training consultants, broader coverage of the topics could result in fewer knowledge gaps and exposure to new ideas. In addition, a highly knowledgeable in-house trainer may have excellent knowledge to share, yet lack the skills to effectively instructor others. To overcome these problems, corporations often hire external trainers to train the in-house experts.
Self-Study Training
Self-study training involves assigning online or video-based courses to individuals and then allowing those trainees to participate in the courses at their own pace. Because these courses can be completed at the employee's leisure, they're extremely flexible. Trainees can focus on specific areas of difficulty as well, allowing for a better use of training time. Accessing the computer training over the intranet or Internet, trainees also participate in interactive exercises, simulations, and other activities which add practical experience to the learning.
Need-Based Training
While some companies specify training based on job role or department others prefer a needs-based training approach. Rather than randomly requiring employees to participate in specific courses, these companies use skills analysis to determine the training needs of each employee. For example, rather than requiring the entire staff to take Microsoft Office courses, individual employees can participate in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access courses based on their current skills and knowledge gaps.
From harnessing the expertise of in-house trainers to deploying self-study courses based on individual needs, today's businesses are recognizing the importance of rigorous training programs based on employee needs.
