Features to Look For In Windows 7

Windows 7 has finally arrived in the hands of users. By now, many individuals have noticed a marked difference concerning the user interface and functionality. The changes run deeper than eye candy and really cute things to perform.

The Aero Desktop includes Aero Peek, allowing a user to view hidden windows, icons and anything else under the current window by making it transparent. Aero Shake permits a user to shake a window, hiding all other windows. Shake it again, the hidden windows appear. Hovering on a thumbnail on the taskbar presents a full screen preview of its contents. The taskbar has been redesigned, using fewer clicks to perform a certain task.

Jump Lists are pre-populated with the most recent user activities and executed applications. Using two clicks, a desired source may be obtained. The Media Player in a jump list shows the most recent played tunes. Or Word may display the most recent documents opened or edited.

Files are now managed in Libraries, regardless of their locations. Think of libraries of a common repository which can be customized, all in a single screen. Pictures can exist in one listing, music or videos in their own library. Documents related to a certain subject can reside in their own library.

The integrated search functions of Windows 7 have been strengthened. Searches can be initiated from the Start menu, a right click on the desktop, or an open window. Searches are much more extensive and may include external sources, such as the Web. The highlight of related words and input recommendations are also included.

Windows Touch adds the ability to touch the screen and perform mouse and scroll pad commands with the tip of your finger, provided the hardware itself has touchscreen capabilities.

Tablet PCs receive a boost with improved tablet functionality. The Math Input screen recognizes handwritten math formulas and integrates them into other programs. Handwriting recognition gains speed, increased accuracy and support for more languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Other notable changes include the catching of applications and data into Fast RAM instead of using the hard drive. Battery life and performance has been improved, powering down when the system is idle. This extends to network ports, displays and applications. Device management is now located in one device state window. Drivers are now automatically downloaded, eliminating user intervention. Security has been enhanced, and the User Account Control has been made more user friendly.

Action Center is a new management console created to handle all alerts and warnings. The Action Center creates a easier environment for the various messages Windows generates. The Windows Defender and Firewall have been improved to better protect systems.

There are many more enhancements to be discovered in Windows 7. The Windows Easy Transfer, Internet Explorer 8, Remote Media Streaming, Location Aware Printing, 64-bit support and the Windows Media Center are just a few of the dozens of changes to the new operating system. In the end, user experience will dictate which features become your go-to favorites.
