Look What's Taking Off: Gigabit Deployments

Remember when Fast Ethernet meant increased speeds of up to 100 megabits per second? Those speeds are so last century. When speeds reached 1000 megabits per second, a new term was coined, "Gigabit Ethernet" or "GigE." No doubt, one gigabyte per second far surpasses 100 megabits per second. Now imagine 10 GigE, 40 GigE, even 100 GigE. . . The future has arrived at unprecedented speeds.

According to research conducted by Infonetics, sales of 10, 40, and 100 GigE ports is expected to continue with sales totaling $105 billion from 2008 to 2013. Last year saw an 86 percent increase in 10 and 40 GigE shipments which led to a revenue increase of 45 percent. Analysts suggest that some service providers are eyeing 100 GigE equipment. In addition, analysts say that while the GigE industry isn't immune to economic downturns, investments in network cores continue as enterprises seek ways to avoid congestion.

With these large deployments and continued investments in network cores comes the need for qualified technicians such as those who have undergone CCNA training. Because Cisco remains the networking leader, Cisco training can help position IT professionals and prepare them for these gigantic, gigabit deployments.
