Is it a Random Computer Error or is it RAM?
Is it a random computer error or is it RAM? You don’t need an advanced Windows Vista certification in order to troubleshoot RAM errors thanks to the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. Defect RAM chips often lead to program errors, stop errors, and operation faults. By ruling out or confirming RAM issues, you’ll be better able to solve the problem.
Many IT professionals have enrolled in online computer training and are well-equipped to handle RAM issues as well as troubleshoot complex computer errors. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a computer whiz to use the Windows Vista Memory Diagnostics tool. This tool will help you rule out or confirm faulty RAM chips as the source of your computer errors.
One of the easiest ways to launch this tool is to go to the Start button and enter “memory” in the Search bar. The Memory Diagnostics tool icon will appear. Click it. This tool is also found in the Control Panel under System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools.
You’ll be prompted with two choices: Restart Now and Check for Errors and Check for Problems the Next Time I Start My Computer. Click Restart Now and Check for Errors.
However, if your computer problems are severe and your computer won’t boot up into Windows properly, you’ll need to load this tool through other means. Hit the F8 key to enter the Windows Boot Manager menu. Use your arrow keys to navigate to the Windows Memory Diagnostics option. You can also use the Windows Vista installation disc to get into the System Recovery Menu where Windows Memory Diagnostics is also listed as an option.
Once the Memory Diagnostics tool launches, you’ll see a DOS-like blue screen with white text as the tool performs its test. The test continuously writes data to memory and reads it, checking for data integrity.
The tool runs basic tests by default though you can opt for extensive testing. Be aware that the extensive tests are quite extensive and may take over eight hours to run. The tests typically repeat twice though you can also increase this number as needed by pressing the Tab key and selecting the number of test runs. Press the F10 key to save your settings and start the tests.
The Memory Diagnostics tool displays status messages as it goes as well as displays the test results in the notification area of the System Tray when Vista restarts. Even if faulty areas of memory are discovered, the tool will avoid the faulty areas of RAM which then allows Vista to start without crashing.
If you didn’t see the notification results in the System Tray or want to review them later, you can find them in the System Events log. Look for MemoryDiagnosticsResults under the Source name and Event ID 1201.
The Windows Vista Memory Diagnostics tool and its reports are valuable troubleshooting tools used by IT professionals and end-users alike. If you want to take your Windows Vista skills to a higher level, consider computer based training or online computer training courses.
