As an IT consultant, it is often tempting to accept any and all jobs. After all, if you’re self-employed, business is business and money is money. The problem with accepting all projects that come your way is that many of them will be outside of your area of expertise. Not only will you let your client down by accepting the wrong type of work, you may also lose money in the process.

For example, if you haven’t had the right level of Oracle 11g DBA training, you are ill-equipped to troubleshoot an Oracle DBA installation. As you struggle through the assignment, you may do more harm than good. Not only are you wasting your time, you’ll end up with an unhappy client. Wouldn’t you rather spend your time working on projects that fall in your area of expertise? Wouldn’t you prefer happy clients?

Because of the pitfalls of accepting the wrong type of IT jobs, it’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses and align your workflow with your skills. Here are a few strategies to ensure that your IT consulting business works for you.

• Team up with another IT professional and refer business back and forth. For example, if you are a project manager and your colleague is a database administrator, you can refer database jobs to your colleague and he can refer project management jobs to you.
• Broaden your skill set. Are your clients consistently asking for your help in areas where you’re not as skilled as you’d like to be? Instead of turning down work, take a online computer training course covering your desired area. In fact, you may want to choose multiple online training courses covering a broad range of technology so that you can adequately handle the projects your clients need you to work on. It’s important to broaden your skills through IT training while also finding one or two areas of deeper expertise.
• Become an expert. Find your passion and work to become an expert. For example, if Cisco networking is one of your favorite types of work, get certified as a Cisco CCIE. You’ll need in-depth, training to reach your goals but will have a professional certification to back up your knowledge and skills. Look for a discipline that you are passionate about and that will continue to be in demand for years to come.
