The latest version of the multi-level communications software incorporates features and enhancements aimed at simplifying user workloads and providing a higher level of business mobility. One of the improvements includes the ability for users to remain connected while mailboxes are being transported between email servers. Migration and maintenance activities can be performed during business hours without disruption of normal workflows. With improved maintenance tools now available in Exchange 2010, third party data replication products have become unnecessary, eliminating redundancy and the extra cost of additional software. Another feature involves the fast recovery and availability of up to sixteen Exchange managed replicas of each mailbox database. Also, in the case of Transport Server failures or upgrades, new built-in redundancy capabilities will redirect mail flow to alternate available routes if necessary.

Micrsoft Exchange 2010 now contains the option to employ immediate-storage devices, such as a user's hard drive to accumulate email in addition to network storage. A simple but huge plus for users is the ability to use a greater option of browsers other than Internet Explorer to access email. Another great user feature is the option to access voicemail using Outlook, eliminating phone based voicemail systems. In fact, users have the possibility to consolidate all of their communications outlets within Outlook. Email, voice mail, instant messaging and text messaging can be accessed in Outlook. A significant feature users will find extremely valuable is MailTips. This element will alert users, before they press the Send key, with a detailed message warning they may be sending undeliverable or mis-sent emails, such as attempting to send confidential information to outside recipients.

Protection and Compliance features added into Exchange Server 2010 include an efficient method to classify email with new defined retention policies that can be applied to individual emails or entire folders. In addition, compliance offers will be able to execute targeted searches across mailboxes, by means of a user friendly web based interface. Everyone will breathe a sigh of relief now that Exchange 2010 has improved and expanded the Information Protection and Control support feature. This eases the task of encrypting, blocking and moderating sensitive or inappropriate emails based on a particular sender, receiver or content. This also allows managers to evaluate mail with the option of approving or blocking the transmission. Security and inappropriateness will always be a concern in the workplace, and Exchange 2010 adds leverage to assist this matter.

Before upgrading from the current Exchange installation, system and enterprise administrators should examine the system requirements of Exchange 2010, located on the Microsoft TechNet website in the Exchange Server TechCenter section. Reviewing the specs will assist administrators in determining the network, hardware, software and other elements, including the client workstations meet all requirements for a smooth transition.
