Microsoft SharePoint Support

As applications are deployed and utilized to perform a certain number of tasks, the discussion eventually revolves around who will support and manage the applications in question. This becomes especially true when the application resides on a server or network. Is the application one that falls under the heading of a database, or is it right to place it in another category? One consensus believes a DBA should concentrate on the support and management of the database server. SharePoint, a collaboration and content management solution, does not fall under the purview of a DBA, as SharePoint itself is an application that sits on top of SQL Server. This would also state other applications would also remain outside the range of a DBA's duties - database functionality and optimization, providing for the database systems, recoverability, and so on.
Some on the other side of the discussion would say a database administrator should be aware of, and supporting the SharePoint installation, for no other reason than it was inevitable that the admin would be working with SharePoint and desire to intelligently support it. Not necessarily. If the tasks landed in the realm of database backups and recovery and other related tasks, everyone would be in agreement. When the duties become tuning, tweaking and supporting web parts, it becomes a different picture. First it becomes support of the core SharePoint installation, then the add-on components and the applications talking to it. This leads into taking on additional application support as well.
Many IT departments are making the DBA also take on the position of SharePoint administrator - it has a database, therefore it must be the DBA's to support and manage. If the possibility exists to draw the line at the storage portions, recoverability, capacity management and related tasks, other individuals may be present to help split things up. As the requirements and growth of SharePoint increases, it may not be an ideal situation to take on application support if you have the option.
