Microsoft Windows 8 – It's coming, but will businesses bite?

Microsoft recently announced its plans for the future: Windows 8. This upcoming operating system represents yet another significant change for the Windows operating system. With a heavy emphasis on mobile computing and touch screen technology, this new operating system sheds the old folder and windows structure for a tablet-like interface.

Consumers and gadget lovers are sure to love it with its bold look and fresh new features, but what about businesses? Will they bite? Windows is a staple in the business world with many businesses continuing to use the decade old Windows XP. Though a dinosaur by today's standards, businesses love XP for several reasons. 1.) It works. 2.) Users know how to use it. 3.) There's no need to reprogram proprietary programs to accommodate a new operating system.

Because of these reasons, and a tendency to keep corporate wallets tightly shut, businesses have been slow to embrace past Windows upgrades. Many businesses skipped Windows Vista altogether. And those that recently moved to Windows 7 may hesitate to do it all over again with Microsoft Windows 8.

The introduction of MS Windows 8 will bring additional reasons not to upgrade. While it's designed not to require additional hardware, the fact that Windows 8 is heavily oriented toward tablet-like use means that most users will want a touch screen. For a single consumer, investing in a new monitor isn't a big deal; but to an enterprise organization looking at replacing and disposing of hundreds of monitors, the price tag could be significant.

Another reason business may hesitate involves computer training. This isn't a simple upgrade with a few enhancements – it's a brand new operating system. This means that all users will need at least introductory computer training. The IT department will need extensive Windows 8 training involving everything from installing and upgrading Windows 8 to securing, configuring, troubleshooting, and supporting the new operating system.

In addition to concerns about the costs, hassles, and training requirements, businesses may worry about how their employees handle change. Upgrading to Windows 8 will be disruptive before, during, and after the installation. This will bring with it a drop in productivity and potentially in morale. No matter how wonderful a new operating system may be, there will be some employees who simply hate it. Others will be frustrated that they can't perform simple tasks the way they used to. Others still will be enamored with the changes, potentially wasting time playing with features that are better left alone.

No doubt, Microsoft Windows 8 will be a fantastic operating system for users in a variety of settings. But will businesses bite or will they remain happy with the status quo?
