New Zealand Invests $3.3 Million in Computer Training
Computer literacy – it's important to societies around the world. So important that the New Zealand government will be investing $3.3 million in community-based learning projects to improve the nation's computer literacy. According to Tariana Turia, New Zealand's community and voluntary sector minister, between 20 to 30 percent of the nation's citizens lack access to digital tools or know how to use them. She said that it's no longer an option to be digitally literate, that it's an essential skill.
Specifically, two programs are earmarked to receive the funding: the Computers in Homes and Computer Clubhouse programs.
- The Computers in Homes program provides computer training to parents of school aged children at their children's schools. After completing the training, parents receive a computer along with additional support.
- The Computer Clubhouse program provides students with free computer training after school. Students gain computer, information, technology, and communications skills.
Funding these and other community-based computer training programs may be able to improve those computer literacy scores in New Zealand.
