What's new?

Let’s start with compatibility. Previously developed applications using earlier versions of the .NET framework will execute smoothly, with minor tweaks such as security, compliance and performance. The .NET 4.0 new features also arrives with utilities to assess memory and CPU usage of individual domains. This resource monitoring reveals how one domain may affect another. The dynamic language runtime is a very new enhancement and environment that includes services for dynamic language support within the common language runtime. Other developer additions are the file system enumeration procedures, enhancing application performance with large file directory access, memory mapped files for large file edits, and customer requested improvements, such as new programming functions and commands, conveniences making the development process easier and quicker.

New .NET Framework 4.0 features include a new library module, the Managed Extensibility Framework, allowing the developer to create extensible and composed applications and choose which locations in an application can extend and reveal services for other extensible applications. Developers will enjoy Parallel Computing, providing the creation of multi-threaded, asynchronous programming without working directly with the thread pool.

Networking improvements in the .NET 4.0 new features list incorporates security authentication improvements, network address translation support for the expanded release of IPv6, support for 64-bit range headers, and new credentials for password based authentication.

ASP.NET receives its share of enhancements in the .NET Framework 4.0 overview with new core services, new API’s, a new application preload manager for auto-start procedures, improved support for Web standards with Web Forms controls, more browser support, data controls, and model view controllers. Object oriented many-to-many relationships and object inheritance, additional support for Ajax, more CSS compatibility, and new utilities for deployment jobs have been added as well.

Before the .NET 4.0 release date of April 2010, developers and other system programmers may opt to receive the new feature set and put the framework through their own paces. A beta 2 download is available from Microsoft, including the 4.0 framework runtime and related support files.

.NET 4.0 Entity Framework features, designed to lend a smoother development process, now supports Model First development, generating the supporting T-SQL and customizing code after the process. A new interface exists, easing the testing procedures of applications utilizing the Entity environment. Templates and API’s for N-Tier application building have been added, as well as integrated code generation between Visual Studio T4 templates and ADO.NET Entity Framework, stored procedure mapping, automatic constraint validation, lazy mapping and SQL generation readability have been added or improved.

The .NET Framework 4.0 features don’t stop there. A new Workflow Designer provides a richer experience and ability to bring deeper functionality.
