The iPad – Learning is in Your Hands

First the iPod, then the iPhone, and at last, the iPad. Apple has surprised the world with innovative devices and is changing how consumers use technology. In fact, Apple could even be changing how students learn. The iPad with its multimedia capabilities can literally put learning in your hands.

For starters, the iPad can store thousands of eBooks, making it possible for students to ditch their heavy backbacks in favor of a single eReader. While having access to textbooks, a dictionary, and a thesaurus may be reason enough to invest in an iPad or Kindle, the iPad offers yet another learning delivery option: full motion video. Combined with Internet access, the power of text and video come together in one of the most convenient devices ever built.

While Amazon's Kindle is an excellent eReader, it lacks the ability to deliver video content. Thus, the iPad has the edge when it comes to e-learning. Surveys show that the iPad is the clear winner amongst general consumers and students alike. A ChangeWave Research survey conducted in November 2010 revealed that 42 percent of the over 2,800 respondents were planning on purchasing an iPad compared to just 33 percent who wanted the Kindle. Another study reported in the Student Monitor indicated that students had similar preferences with 46 percent preferring the iPad compared to 38 percent opting for the Kindle.

One of the major advantages that the iPad has is its intuitive interface. As a classroom learning tool, the iPad can deliver interactive content without a steep learning curve. In fact, even toddlers are using the iPad to learn. AdAge.com recently discussed this phenomenon in an article titled, "How the iPad became Child's Play – and Learning Tool." PBS, Disney, Nickelodean and other publishers are seeing the marketing and educational opportunities offered by the iPad.

With its intuitive interface, portable design, interactive features, and ability to deliver massive amounts of content, the iPad could become a true learning tool. Currently, the iPad lacks USB and memory card slots and does not support Flash Web pages. These limitations mean that the iPad is not quite perfect yet. However, with a few tweaks, it soon will be.
