Using Command Line Shortcuts to Configure Windows Server 2008
The new Windows Server 2008 interface has caused a great deal of confusion to administrators and users of previous versions. After all, all of your favorite tools have been renamed and moved to new locations, buried deep in layers that are not easy to navigate - even when you know where these locations happen to be. And if you don't know where they are located, you may even wonder if they exist at all!
But don't worry. The following command line shortcuts are available and will launch your favorite tools directly from a command prompt.
- Programs and Features - Programs and Features (formerly Add and Remove Programs) is located in the Control Panel. However, you don't have to first go to the Control Panel to launch this tool. Instead, enter appwiz.cpl . This immediately launches the Programs and Features applet.
- Server Manager - Enter CompMgmtLauncher.exe from a command prompt and instantly access this computer server manager.
- System Properties - System Properties has long been a favorite tool used for numerous purposes including enabling remote access, accessing the Device Manager, renaming servers, and more. In the earlier versions, all you had to do was right-click My Computer but it's not so easy with Windows Server 2008 - unless you know this command: sysdm.cpl .
- Display and Resolution - Similarly, display and resolution settings are hard to find if you don't know where to look. Instead of searching in vain, simply use the desk.cpl command.
- Manage Network Connections - One of the most common tools that you'll use when working with Server 2008 is also one of the more difficult ones to access. Instead of clicking here, clicking there, and finally finding the tool, enter the following command line shortcut: ncpa.cpl .
